Cataracts

Cataract in Dogs is usually hereditary in nature but can also be caused because of injury. A diabetic

dog is more prone to cataracts. Cataract can be in static for or it might increase with time. If cataract

covers less than 30 % of lens than it might not cause any harm but once it spread to more than 60 %

of lens than dog become visually impaired. Cataract usually progresses because of many factors like

breed of dog, type of cataract, age or presence of diseases like diabetes.

Treatment

If cataract id suspected in dog than it must be taken to a Veterinarian for Eye examination and

understanding the level of vision impairment. Cataract can be removed by a surgical procedure

called Phacoemulsification which is similar to what is performed in humans. In this process the

cloudy part is removed from the eye. This process is usually performed when dog finds difficulty in

vision.

Dry eye

Also known as Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), in this condition the tear gland in inflamed and is

unable to produce the normal amount of tears thus making eyes dry. Because of less or not tear the

eyes are not lubricated and becomes unhealthy. Dry eye can be caused because of many reasons

but mainly it is associated with disorder of immune system. In certain breeds this condition can be

very painful and if left unattended than it can worsen. In order to diagnose these condition early

stages, regular eye examination is important.

Conjunctivitis can be caused because of virus or bacteria. In this condition pink area under the eyelid

becomes inflamed and infected. It might be noninfectious in nature but during treatment the infected

dog must be kept away from other pets at home.

dogs as it helps in identification of any kind of injury or infection in early stages. Regular examination

helps one access the cleanliness in dog’s ear canal and need for cleaning the ear. Some breeds are more

prone to ear infection thus require special attention for ear checking. While examination any kind of

discharge or odor might suggest the presence of infection in ear. If there is any kind of inflammation,

redness, swelling or pain then consult a local veterinarian before initiating cleaning process.

As you all know the ear canal ends with ear drum and have complex structure which makes it difficult to

expel any stuck object without any assistance. Any foreign object in dog’s ear can be an irritant and a

source of future infection.

For ear cleaning one can use a good quality ear cleaner. If the ear is having any inflammation or injury

than do not use cleanser containing Hydrogen peroxide and alcohol as it may cause irritation in ear

canal. If veterinarian find any kind of ear infection, than he can recommend cleanser having anti-fungal

or anti-bacterial properties.

Apart from good quality cleanser you may need cotton swabs, gauge and some treats for cleaning ear.

1. Make your dog sit in front of you with rear leg placed between your legs. For large breeds make

side.

2. Hold the ear flap vertically so that ear canal can be observed. Use other hand to hold ear

cleaning solution.

3. Apply some ear cleaning solution in dog ear. Do not put the tip of bottle in the ear. After

applying the cleaning solution clean the tip using cotton swabs to prevent spread of harmful

bacteria or fungus.

4. Keeping ear flap vertically, gently massage the base of the ear for 30-40 seconds. This will help

spread of cleaning solution in the ear and break the debris.

5. Use cotton ball and gauze to wipe away debris from inner part of the ear flap. Allow the dog to

shake his head which will allow the remaining ear solution and debris to move out of canal to

the outer opening of the ear. Use cotton ball to remove the debris from outer canal.

6. Provide treat to the dog and wait for minutes before repeating the same process with other

ear.

7. If any pain, swelling or injury is observed then stop the process and consult your veterinarian

immediately.
